The Eames Dining Height Armchair Wood Base (DAW) was designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1950. Archetypical of the Eames chair design, the plastic shell can be combined with diverse bases – in this case. the wooden base. The seat shells are also available with a seat cushion or full upholstery.

History of the Eames DAW Armchair

Initial versions of the DAW from the 1950s were fraught with issues including snapping, splintering and cracking since the original base couldn’t cope with the stresses and strains of everyday use of the chair. Metal attached to wooden dowels would apply too much pressure around the joins and the brackets. This was not limited just to the DAW Armchair, but all chairs in the DAW series.

The 2001 re-launch

50 years after the launch of the Eames DAW Armchair, a revised edition was released with new dowel leg versions which contain metal rods through the legs themselves, which takes all the pressure of the weight from the wood and brings back to life one of the most classic chair designs ever made.

The shell is crafted from one single piece of moulded polypropylene plastic which is dyed through meaning that the colour will never fail. Furthermore, the moulding means that it complements the human body ensuring that comfort is assured – the Eames objective to create low-cost, durable and comfortable furniture.
